Cupping goes back thousands of years. Ancient Egypt tried it around 1550 BCE. As far as we know China picked it up by 300 CE. The K’oran lists cupping as a sacred health intervention. Many European cultured have a long history of using cups. The Greeks and Romans used cupping. Around the 1900s, physiotherapists in the West adopted it, progressing from flame induced vacuum’s to the mechanical pumps we use today. 

Yet in the West cupping has been severely under-utilised during a period where the emphasis has been on using pharmacological interventions to manage inflammation. Whilst in the East they have continued to use cupping enthusiastically, which is why we now associate it with China.
